Add Header and Footer to PDF

Add a company name, document title, page numbers like "3 / 10" and the date to the top and bottom of every PDF page. Choose a font. Your file is never uploaded.

Your files never leave this device. Everything is processed inside your browser and nothing is uploaded to a server.

How to use the Add Header and Footer to PDF tool

  1. Click "Choose PDF file" or drag the PDF onto the screen.
  2. Type the text for "Header (top of page)" and "Footer (bottom of page)", and choose left, center or right alignment for each. You can fill in just one.
  3. Write {page} for the page number, {total} for the number of pages and {date} for today, and they are filled in on each page. For example: "{page} / {total}"
  4. Choose a font from the list below (click "Download" the first time), then the size and color. To leave the cover blank, turn on "Skip the first page (cover)".
  5. Check the page preview, click "Add header and footer", then "Download" when it is done.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Files are processed only inside your browser and are never sent to any server. Only the code and character mapping data needed for processing are downloaded from this site; your files themselves never leave your device. You can check this yourself in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools.

Are my files safe even with ads on the page?

Yes. Ads only run outside the tool area. The tool area, where you choose and process files, is an isolated space your browser keeps separate, so other scripts on the page, including ads, cannot read your file content or file names. Nothing inside the tool area can be sent out. When you drag a file onto the page, the tool area expands to fill the screen so the isolated space receives the file.

How is this different from Add Page Numbers?

Add Page Numbers quickly adds numbers only, with no font to download. Header and footer lets you add text such as a company name or document title, together with page numbers and the date, using a font you choose.

If I skip the cover, where does numbering start?

Pages are counted from the first page, so with the cover skipped, the second page shows "2". This matches how most documents count the cover as page 1.

What does the date look like?

Today's date on this device, in the format of the page language (for example, 10/15/2026). To use another date, type it directly instead of {date}.

Will it overlap the content?

Headers and footers are placed about 10 mm in from the page edge. If the document has very narrow margins they may overlap, so check the preview. Choosing "Small" helps.

How do fonts work?

Text in a PDF needs a font. A font from the list is downloaded once and kept in this browser for next time. Only the characters you use are embedded, so the file barely grows. You can also upload your own font.
