How to use the Unlock PDF tool
- Click "Choose PDF file" or drag the PDF you want to unlock onto the screen.
- If the PDF asks for a password, enter it and click "Open". A PDF that only restricts printing or copying opens without a password.
- Click "Unlock PDF".
- When it is done, click "Download". The new PDF opens without a password and has no printing or copying restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Files are processed only inside your browser and are never sent to any server. Only the code and character mapping data needed for processing are downloaded from this site; your files themselves never leave your device. You can check this yourself in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools.
Are my files safe even with ads on the page?
Yes. Ads only run outside the tool area. The tool area, where you choose and process files, is an isolated space your browser keeps separate, so other scripts on the page, including ads, cannot read your file content or file names. Nothing inside the tool area can be sent out. When you drag a file onto the page, the tool area expands to fill the screen so the isolated space receives the file.
Can I unlock a PDF if I do not know the password?
No. A PDF that asks for a password when opened can only be unlocked with that password. There is no feature for guessing passwords. A PDF that opens without a password but blocks printing or copying can have those restrictions removed.
Where is the password I enter stored?
Nowhere. The password is only used on this device to open the file, and it is gone when you close the page.
Will the content change or lose quality?
No. Only the protection is removed. Pages, text and images are saved exactly as they were.
Can I unlock someone else's PDF?
Only use this on files you own or have the right to handle. Do not use it to go against the wishes of the person who set the restrictions or to infringe copyright.
