How to use the PDF to Text tool

- The text of every page is read right away and shown in the box below. You can select and copy just the part you need.
- To save it as a file, click "Download TXT". Each page starts with a line such as "--- Page 1 ---".
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Files are processed only inside your browser and are never sent to any server. Only the code and character mapping data needed for processing are downloaded from this site; your files themselves never leave your device. You can check this yourself in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools.
Are my files safe even with ads on the page?
Yes. Ads only run outside the tool area. The tool area, where you choose and process files, is an isolated space your browser keeps separate, so other scripts on the page, including ads, cannot read your file content or file names. Nothing inside the tool area can be sent out. When you drag a file onto the page, the tool area expands to fill the screen so the isolated space receives the file.
Can I extract text from a scanned PDF?
No. In a scanned PDF the text is part of an image, so there is no text to extract. Reading text from images (OCR) is not available yet.
What happens with tables or multi-column documents?
Text is joined in the order it is stored in the PDF. Table cells and columns are not preserved, so the order may be mixed up.
Are non-English characters preserved?
Yes. The TXT file is saved as UTF-8 and opens directly in Notepad and other editors. Some PDFs lack character information, so a few characters may come out wrong.
