Compress PDF

Make a PDF smaller by re-saving the photos inside it. Text stays as it is, and you choose how much to shrink. Everything happens inside your browser.

Your files never leave this device. Everything is processed inside your browser and nothing is uploaded to a server.

How to use the Compress PDF tool

  1. Click "Choose PDF file" or drag the PDF you want to shrink onto the screen.
  2. Choose how much to shrink. If you are not sure, choose "Balanced".
  3. Click "Compress PDF". PDFs with many photos take longer, and the bar shows the progress.
  4. When it is done, you see the old and new sizes. Click "Download". To shrink it further, choose "More" and compress again.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Files are processed only inside your browser and are never sent to any server. Only the code and character mapping data needed for processing are downloaded from this site; your files themselves never leave your device. You can check this yourself in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools.

Are my files safe even with ads on the page?

Yes. Ads only run outside the tool area. The tool area, where you choose and process files, is an isolated space your browser keeps separate, so other scripts on the page, including ads, cannot read your file content or file names. Nothing inside the tool area can be sent out. When you drag a file onto the page, the tool area expands to fill the screen so the isolated space receives the file.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

PDFs with many photos, such as scanned documents or reports with pictures, often shrink to half or less. PDFs with only text are usually stored compactly already and barely shrink. If the result is not smaller than the original, no file is created and you are told so.

Will the text get blurry?

No. Text and lines stay as they are, and only the photos inside the PDF are re-saved. You can still search and copy the text. Scanned pages, however, are photos of text, so "More" can make them blurry. Try "Balanced" first.

Do large files take a long time?

It depends on the number of photos and your device. Several photos are shrunk at once, matched to the number of CPU cores, and the screen keeps responding while it works. On a phone, files of several hundred MB may run out of memory.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. Open it with the password and compress it. The new PDF has no password, so use "Protect PDF" to add one again.
